1. How do I manage my 5?

1.a Topics versus links

Your 5 can contain all topics, all links or a combination of topics and links

Topics are words, phrases or names. Examples include dogs, world peace, Barack Obama, Las Vegas. Topics don't have specific web addresses of their own, but clicking on a topic takes you to a search engine such as Google... this gives people who are interested in a topic a quick way to find out more about it.

Links are anything that has a specific web address. A link can be very general (for example, a homepage such as www.5ology.com) or very specific (the web address of an article, video, profile, song, blog, etc. within a website). Clicking on a link takes you to that website, article, video, profile, song, blog, etc.

1.b Add a topic:

  1. Click modify by the item that you wish to replace
  2. Delete any text in the Title and URL boxes
  3. Type in the topic (for example, surfing) in the Title box
  4. Click save

Replace a 5 with a topic

After clicking save, you will see an icon to the left of the topic. This icon means that the topic is now linked to a search engine such as Google… this gives people who are interested in a topic a quick way to find out more about it.

1.c Add a link:

  1. Click modify by the item that you wish to replace
  2. Delete any text in the Title and URL boxes
  3. Type or paste the link (for example, www.5ology.com) in the URL box
  4. If you want to add a personal title (for example, 5ology is really addicting), type the title in the Title box. Adding a title does not affect 5ology’s search for matches for this link
  5. Click save

Replace a 5 with a link

After clicking save you will see an icon to the left of the link. This icon is the logo for the website of the link. If the website doesn't have a logo, an earth icon is displayed.

2. Why do I need to add social networks?

5ology is simply about finding people who share your interests right now, and leaves the building and maintaining of relationships to social networks. As such, 5ology does not provide a way to e-mail or instant message others. However, by providing social-network information, you have a way to contact people you want to know beyond their 5's... and they have a way to contact you.

Contacting people through their social networks is easy. When viewing a profile, simply click on one of the social-network icons to send a message. It is recommended that you include your 5ology URL name in the message so the person receiving the message can see the interest(s) you share. Please note that you may have to login or join that social network in order to send a message through that social network.

3. Why do I have a URL name?

Your URL name (www.5ology.com/profile/*your-URL-name*) serves as both your username on 5ology and a link directly to your 5... making it quick and easy for your friends / family to see what your interests are right now. Feel free to post your URL on your social network(s), or send it to those you want to follow your 5. Please note that your URL name is limited to 20 characters and, once you create a URL name, it cannot be changed.

4. How does 5ology search for matches?

When you click “5 it,” 5ology searches for all profiles that match at least one of your 5.

For topics, the search looks for exact matches to the text in the Title box. So, the topic “surfing” will match with “surfing” but not with “surfing at Huntington Beach.”

For links, the search process is different. The search looks for exact matches to the web address in the URL box. Any text in the Title box (including your personal titles) does not affect the search process.

Where a topic or link is in your 5 has no impact on the search process.
